SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Freshman Benjamin Shipp, sophomore Stephen Franken, and senior Jacob McBride of the NC State men’s golf team have been named to the Golf Coaches Association of America’s (GCAA) PING All-Region Team, the organization announced recently.
The honor is the second for Franken (2016) and the first for both Shipp and McBride. NC State last had three All-Region honorees during the same season in 1991.
These three Wolfpack golfers played important roles in NC State’s successful 2016-17 season, during which the team posted a 109-50-3 record, finished fifth at the ACC Championships, and qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the ninth time in the last ten seasons.
Benjamin Shipp | Freshman | Duluth, Ga.
Had a very strong debut Wolfpack season, competing in 11 tournaments and 32 total rounds … Averaged 72 strokes per round to rank third on the team … Earned six top-20 finishes and four top-10 results … Shot scores of 67 on four occasions … Finished fourth at the Chris Schenkel Invite (208, -8) … Tied for fifth at the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate (211, -2) … Tied for 10th at the Wolfpack Spring Open (210, -3) … Tied for 17th at the Hootie at Bulls Bay (215, -1) … Tied for 47th at the ACC Championship (230, +14) … Tied for 20th at the NCAA Austin Regional (215, +2) … Of his 32 rounds, 16 (.500) were shot at or below par to rank third on the team … Twenty-nine of his 32 rounds (.906) counted towards the team’s score, ranking fourth on the team.
Stephen Franken | Sophomore | Raleigh, N.C.
Dean’s List fall 2016 … All-ACC Team … Competed in all 12 tournaments and 34 rounds of the season … Finished first on the team in stroke average at 71.17 strokes per round (fourth lowest season in program history) … Recorded eight top-20 finishes and six top-10 results … Finished third at the Bridgestone Intercollegiate (207, -9) … Placed fourth at the Hootie at Bulls Bay (208, -8) … Tied for fifth at the ACC Championship (212, -4) … Tied for 45th at the NCAA Austin Regional (222, +9) … Led the team with 21 of his 34 rounds (.617) being under or at par … Ranked third on the team with 32 (.914) of his rounds counting towards the team’s score at official tournaments … During the middle of the season, finished within the top 19 of a tournament field at eight consecutive tournaments … Was NC State’s top finisher in five of 12 tournaments … Season low round was a 66 and best 54-hole score was a 207.
Jacob McBride | Senior | Hartville, Ohio
Competed in 11 tournaments and 32 rounds during his senior season at NC State … Finished second on the team with a stroke average of 71.4 strokes per round (5th lowest season in program history) … Recorded five top-20 finishes, four top-10 results, and three runner-up honors … Best round of the season was a 65 and best 54-hole score of the season was a 204 … Tied for second at the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate (208, -5), the Gary Koch Invite (208, -9), and the Wolfpack Spring Open (204, -9) … Tied for 27th at the ACC Championships (222, +6) … Tied for 10th in the field at the NCAA Austin Regional (211, -2) … Eighteen of his 32 rounds (.562) were at or below par, ranking second on the team … Thirty of his 32 rounds (.937) counted towards the team’s score during the season … Only Wolfpack golfer during the season to record a 65 … Concludes his career with 39 completed tournaments, 111 total rounds played, a stroke average of 72.86 (7th in program history), 15 top-20 finishes, 11 top-10 results, and four runner-up honors.
