Wake Forest sophomore shoots 2-over in challenging first round conditions

SUGAR GROVE, Ill – Wake Forest sophomore Jennifer Kupcho opened play at the 2017 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship during a rainy first round at Rich Harvest Farms. Kupcho shot a 2-over 74 during the opening round to end the first day tied for fifth place, two shots off the lead.

Kupcho had six birdies, six bogeys and one double-bogey during a first round where none of the 132 players in the field shot under par. The round of 74 snapped Kupcho’s school record streak of 12 consecutive rounds under par.

“Overall, Jennifer player very well, considering the weather,” said head coach Dianne Dailey. “The conditions were tough, with rain and wind chills in the 30s. Having six birdies in her round was outstanding. She played her way into contention, which is what you want after the first round.”

The tournament will continue with the second round on Saturday and the third round on Sunday. After the field is cut following the third round, the final round will be held on Monday and will air live on the Golf Channel.
