GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG Baseball suffered a 13-4 loss to the Wofford Terriers Thursday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) gave the Spartans an early lead, belting his seventh home run of the season to put UNCG 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Wofford responded in the fourth inning, and scored in the final three frames to put the game out of reach. UNCG falls to 21-12 overall and 7-3 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improves to 19-16 and 4-3 in the SoCon.
“We didn’t play well in any phase of the game tonight.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “The first time through the lineup, (Bryce) Hensley was very effective, but for some reason, the second time through they were able to adjust and hit three consecutive doubles. Then a walk and a bunt that was placed in a spot where we didn’t handle it right, and they made the most of their opportunities, and we gave them a lot of thosetonight. With that many hits, walks and mistakes defensively, there’s a lot of traffic out there and we never could overcome it.”
“Early in the game offensively, we battled.” Jarrett continued, “Their starting pitcher did a very good job. He pitched the righties and lefties differently, managed it and they played really good defense behind it. We got ourselves down and couldn’t keep it in check in the bullpen and it got away from us. I’ll look for the guys to be resilient like they have all year, and come back tomorrow and be ready to play.
Bryce Hensley (Ashville, N.C./Catawba Valley CC) started on the hill. The junior threw 4.0 innings, allowing five hits, five earned runs and struck out four batters. Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) was first out of the bullpen. Wantz threw 2.2 innings, scattering four hits and allowing two unearned runs. Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va./Patrick Henry CC) threw 1.1 innings in relief, striking out a batter and giving up three hits. Michael Bates (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) threw the final inning, getting two strikeouts and allowing two hits.
UNCG’s offense scored eight hits in the contest. Trejo, along with Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) and Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) each tallied two hits. Trejo drove in two runs and scored one. Spitznagel added an RBI and a run scored. Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga State CC) drove in a run.
UNCG took the lead in the second inning, getting a two-run home run from Trejo. The Spartans added another in the third inning. Spitznagel singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Goss singled through the right side to push the lead to 3-0.
The Terriers were able to take the lead the top of the fourth inning. After leading off with three-straight doubles from Kody Ruedisili, McClain Bradley and Brett Hash, a passed ball and a walk put runners on the corners. Andrew Orzel laid down a bunt hit to drive in the third run. Max McDougald singled to right to score one and the attempt to get the runner going to third was wild, allowing Orzel to score and Wofford to take a 5-3 lead.
The Spartans cut into the Terrier lead in the fifth. After Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) and Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) led off with back-to-back walks, Spitznagel doubled to left field to score Sigmon. Embler was thrown out at the plate to help the Terriers keep the narrow lead.
Wofford tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning. After a lead off walk to Ruedisili, a throwing error put one on, but the Spartans were able to throw out Ruedisili out at the plate. A fly out moved Bradley to third before he was able to score on a wild pitch. Carson Waln singled and came around to score when Orzel doubled down the right field line.
The Terriers tacked on insurance runs in the top of the ninth via a Reed Massey sacrifice fly and a Mack Nathanson two-run homer.
