1. Hodge, who was a South Point assistant coach for 13 seasons, takes over for Mickey Lineberger, who retired following the Red Raiders 16-7 3A state championship victory over Rocky Mount.

2. Hodge, who played on the Red Raiders 2003 3A state title team, is just the fifth head football coach in the school’s 48-year history.

3. There have been 12 teams in the long history of Gaston County High School football to win state championships. Hodge has the distinction of being the first head coach to take over a defending state champion the following season.

COACHES STATEMENT:  This (South Point) is a great place to be. It’s the best place for high school football in North Carolina. Coach Lineberger did a great job here for a long, long time. I’m just happy to be here and be a part of it. He (Coach Lineberger) coached me and we’ll look to try and do the same things we’ve done for the last 48 years to be successful. We’ve worked hard all summer and are looking to have a good year.

Our goal every year is to win the state championship, but the real goal of high school football is to create good husbands, good fathers and good citizens, that’s what you do it for. We want to win the state championship, but at the end of the day the goal is to make good people. If we do that then we’ve been successful.
