WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Wake Forest field hockey team will bolster its ranks with three new additions to the program for the 2017 season, as head coach Jennifer Averill announced Thursday the additions of Sam Buzalewski, Alexis Grippo and Anne van Hoof.
“Wake Forest is honored to announce Sam Buzalewski, Alexis Grippo and Anne van Hoof to our 2017 squad,” said Averill. “These three young women represent the athletic and academic determination necessary to succeed at the college level. Their competitive nature and desire for growth will add huge value to our team.”
Sam Buzalewski | Midfielder | Oley, Pennsylvania | Oley Valley HS
A MAX Field Hockey Top-50 recruit, Sam Buzalewski has experience in both club and high school field hockey. The midfielder from Oley, Pennsylvania played in the 2014 and 2015 Junior Olympics as well as the 2014, 2015 and 2016 National Futures Championship. She is a member of the X-Calibur Field Hockey Club and teammates with fellow signee Alexis Grippo. The X-Calibur team finished fifth at the 2015 U16 National Club Championship and third in the 2013 U14 championship. Buzalewski also plays for 2016 state runner-up Oley Valley High School. In 2016, the squad earned the District III A field hockey title while Buzalewski earned All-State First Team honors. She was twice named MVP after her team won the 2015 and 2016 Berks County Field Hockey Championship. Off the field, Buzalewski was named an NFHCA High School Scholar of Distinction for a cumulative unweighted GPA above a 3.90. Along with field hockey, Buzalewski also lettered in track and field.
Alexis Grippo | Forward | Point Pleasant, New Jersey | The Hill School
A varsity starter since her freshman year, Alexis Grippo brings experience to the Wake Forest front line as a forward. Grippo is the all-time leading scorer for the 2016 and 2013 Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) champion team, The Hill School. She was named to the 2016 Pottstown Mercury First Team All-Area and to the 2014 and 2015 Pottstown Mercury Second Team All-Area team along with earning MAPL First Team honors from 2014-16. Grippo currently plays alongside fellow recruit Sam Buzalewski for the X-Calibur Field Hockey Club. Before that, she played for the WC Eagles from 2013-2016 where her team was 2013-15 RCC and NCC Champions and 2015 Festival Pool Champions. Outside of field hockey, Grippo also plays ice hockey.
Anne van Hoof | Back | Schijndel, Netherlands | Rodenborch College
Anne van Hoof enters her freshman season at Wake Forest with years of international experience. Van Hoof played for the U16 and U18 Dutch national team from 2014-16. She has also played for HC Den Bosch since 2009 where her team won two National Championships and made it to the finals/semifinals of the Dutch National Club Championships all eight of her seasons. She began her field hockey career with HC Hopbel from 2006-2009 and has played in multiple international tournaments in the Czech Republic and Spain as well as training internationally. She currently attends Rodenborch College in Rosmalen, Netherlands.
