KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 30, 2017) – Mitch Roman homered and Grant Massey drove in two runs in a three-run first inning, but the Intimidators surrendered the lead and fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds 6-4 on Friday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Kannapolis (4-5 Second Half, 43-34) suffered its fourth consecutive loss.
Delmarva starter Alex Wells recovered from a shaky first inning to earn the win. Wells (6-4) allowed three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in 6.0 innings. Blake Hickman (1-2) took the loss for Kannapolis allowing five earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Steven Klimek recorded seven outs for his third save of the season.
Roman’s solo shot to left-center field, his second of the year, gave Kannapolis the lead in the bottom of the first. Later in the frame, three consecutive hits capped by a two-RBI double from Massey to left center made it 3-0. Massey finished the night 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Kannapolis held that lead until the fourth inning when Delmarva scored two, one on an RBI groundout by Preston Palmeiro. The Shorebirds took the lead two innings later in the sixth when Palmeiro hit a three-run home run to right center sparking a four-run frame that chased Hickman from the game. Palmeiro finished 1-for-3 with four RBI and a walk.
Kannapolis threatened in the bottom of the seventh against Delmarva’s pen when three walks loaded the bases, however, Micker Adolfo lined out to center and the Intimidators stranded three runners on base. The I’s left 8 aboard in total.
The Intimidators scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth when Daniel Gonzalez doubled home Massey to make it 6-4.
