The Carolina Panthers have claimed offensive tackle Jonathan Martin off of waivers from San Francisco, the team announced Friday.
Martin, 6-5 and 315 pounds, has started 32 of 38 games played in three NFL seasons with Miami (2012-13) and San Francisco (2014), seeing action at left and right tackle.
“Our goal is to build the strongest roster possible and add competition at every position,” general manager Dave Gettleman said. “Jonathan brings quality experience to our offensive line, having started 32 games in his career at both tackle spots.”
In 2014, Martin played in 15 games with nine starts at right tackle for San Francisco. Martin helped pave the way for the 49ers to rush for a single-game franchise record 355 yards versus San Diego (12/20/14). The 355 rushing yards were the most by any NFL team since November 2007.
Martin played collegiately at Stanford and entered the NFL as a second-round (42nd overall) draft choice of Miami in 2012.
