COLUMBIA, SC – Michael Paez doubled and drove in a run on Friday, but Columbia fell to West Virginia, 3-1. Paez is hitting .423 over his last eight games.
A crowd of 6,569 made it out to Spirit Communications Park – the 12th crowd of 5,000 or more this season (22 home games).
After Hunter Owen clubbed a two-run home run in top of the first inning, the Fireflies bounced back with a score in the home half. Andres Gimenez singled – extending his on-base streak to 15 games – and two batters later, Paez knocked him in.
Columbia (21-18) out-hit West Virginia (19-21), seven to four, but that would be all the scoring for the Fireflies. The Power added another unearned run off of Blake Taylor (L, 0-5) in the third to extend the lead to 3-1. Taylor struck out seven over six innings. It was his third straight start lasting six frames.
Cam Vieaux (W, 2-0) picked up the win for the visitors.
Columbia and West Virginia meet again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Spirit Communications Park. The Fireflies plan to start righty Harol Gonzalez (2-2, 6.00) and he’ll face Power right-hander James Marvel (2-3, 3.97).
