CONWAY, S.C. – Appalachian State University baseball would threaten multiple times but fell short of bringing home runs as it fell 5-0 to No. 24 Coastal Carolina at Springs Brooks Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (19-34, 8-20 Sun Belt) were led by Tyler Stroup (Thomasville, N.C./East Davidson) and Brian Bauk (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) at the plate with both of them going 2-for-4. Bauk also finished with a double on the day.
The Appalachian pitching staff performed well as Matt Schaeffer (Port St. Lucie, Fla./John Carroll Catholic (Tallahassee C.C.)) got his second start of the season, tossing three no-hit innings to start, striking out three batters in his 6.2 innings of work – his longest of the year.
Sean Mason (Austin, Texas/McNeil) came in to finish the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one run while fanning three batters.
Extended innings off three errors would ultimately play a large part in the game, as the Chanticleers (35-18-1, 20-7-1 Sun Belt) would only put up two runs in the fourth and seventh innings and one score in the eighth. Only four of CCU’s runs would be earned.
The Mountaineers will try to bounce back in Conway as they ready to face Coastal Carolina in Game Two of the series. App State is 5-0 in road conference games played on Day Two. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
