Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s basketball team dominated Shaw University in a 74-55 divisional win on Wednesday, February 15th at Felton J. Capel Arena. The Lady Broncos improve 7-17 overall, 5-6 in the conference, 2-7 in the division; while the Lady Bears drop to 10-17 overall, 7-8 in the conference and 5-4 in the division.
FSU was outstanding offensively, scoring off numerous Shaw turnovers. Fayetteville State outscored the Bears by shooting 41.7% (30-72) from the field and 71.4% (10-14) from the free throw line. With a combination of strong defensive play and a high offensive push, the Lady Broncos were able to gain the victory.
Freshman guard Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) finished with a game-high 19 points. Junior guard Breona Jones (Henderson, NC) contributed with 10 points and a game-high six assists. Junior forward De’ Aira Smith (Godwin, NC) recorded a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Emerald Smith (Durham, NC) finished with seven points in her final performance in Capel Arena.
In the first half, both teams caused great impact with scoring. The contest had eight lead changes and was tied three times; all in the first two quarters. Raquel Kellow led the Lady Bears in scoring with 15 points and six turnovers. She shot 4-4 from the three-point line. Bianca Maxwell and Stephanie Custodio followed with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
However, the lack of ball control from Shaw outweighed their 70% (7-10) shooting behind the 3-point line. In the fourth, the Lady Broncos led by as much as 20 points with 1:26 left in the game. FSU capped the game with the victory and snapped Shaw’s three game winning streak.
“I was really proud of our team tonight, we played solid for all four quarters,” said head coach Serena King-Coleman. “I hope this is a sign of things to come heading into the CIAA Tournament. We played well in transition, made the majority of our easy shots, and committed on the defensive side of the ball.”
FSU will close out the regular season on the road matchup against Saint Augustine’s University on Saturday, February 18th. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, NC.
