(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) — Charlotte catcher Kevan Smith drove in three runs, Yoan Moncada had two hits, but the Charlotte Knights dropped the finale of their three-game series to the Norfolk Tides by a score of 10-5 on Thursday from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. The game was delayed by rain after the top of the seventh inning concluded at 9:10 p.m. and later called official after a 45-minute delay.
The Tides jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning off Charlotte RHP Tyler Danish (1-2, 3.14), who started the game and was saddled with the loss. Danish allowed a total of eight runs (five earned) on seven hits over 5.2 innings pitched.
Offensively for the Knights, Moncada — Chicago’s top prospect — finished the game with two hits and a run scored. The 21-year-old Cuban native extended his hit streak 10 consecutive games and is now batting a team-best .340 on the season. Smith paced the offense and tied the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning. Two innings later, his sacrifice fly RBI put the Knights ahead by a score of 5-4. For the night, Smith went 1-for-2 with one run scored and three RBIs.
Norfolk RHP Mike Wright (1-3, 4.91) earned the win after allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings pitched. The East Carolina University product struck out six batters and earned the complete game victory.
The Knights will continue their six-game homestand on Friday and open a three-game series against the Gwinnett Braves. RHP Reynaldo Lopez (2-1, 4.10) will get the start for the Knights against Gwinnett RHP Aaron Blair (1-2, 8.82).
