When High School Football is talked about in Gaston County there are many schools that define greatness. One school you won’t name is the East Gaston Warriors, but if you spend sometime around Coach Sean Joyce and these guys, opinions might change.
In 42 years, East Gaston has had only 9 winning season and 3 conference Championships and this year’s coaching staff is trying to change tradition.
“We’re trying to shift the atmosphere” says Coach Joyce.
Coach Joyce enters his 4th season as the Warriors Head Coach, not cocky, but very confident, that he has a team that can compete with South Point and the other major schools in the Big South Conference.
“We have all the pieces to the puzzle” Says Joyce, “By far the best I have been around”.
This season is all about goals. There are many guys on this team that have the determination to play at the next level. Justice Smith, George Miller and Austin Woods all want to be in D-1 programs in the future and this coaching staff believes it can happen.
“Talent is there” says Coach Joyce.
Biggest thing coach is working on is changing the atmosphere around this football program.
“Attitude and Effort” is something that this coaching staff talks about all the time. Attitude and Effort is going to help achieve their goals this season.
Besides the teams mind set another change will be the offense, this year more of a spread option. Quarterback Alex Adams will play a big part in helping this offense stand out.
“He has far exceeded what I thought he could bring to the table” says Joyce “He’s pretty good”
Players to Watch for:
On the offensive side of the ball there are a lot of soon to be studs to look out for. Jordan Wilson and Tyler Spurling are two guys that coach wants everyone to get to know.
Jordan is “going to make an impact right away” says Coach Joyce and Tyler Spurling “is pretty special and somebody that teams will have to game plan for.”
The defensive side of the ball isn’t too shabby either. Kyle Truett and Chris Peterson are just a couple of names to look out for.
Kyle is “Really Really Good” says Coach Joyce and Chris Peterson “They will know him real quick”
The East Gaston Warriors open the season with back to back road games against East Lincoln tonight and Kings Mountain next Friday. Then a 4 game home stand starts with Lincolnton on 12th of September, Cherryville on the 19th, rival South Point on the 26th and then they kick off October with Lake Norman Charter on the 3rd.
“I fully expect us to go into South Point undefeated” says Joyce.
Good News for East Gaston is they get Rival South Point at home this year for the first time in 3 years.
If you ask anyone at the school, they will tell you that game is circled on the schedule, but, if you ask coach he is only worried about opening the season.
“I have been preaching to our guys the game circled on our schedule is East Lincoln” says Coach Joyce.
The rest of the schedule plays out as @Huss on the 10th of October, Home for Ashbrook, @North Gaston, and home for Stuart Cramer and to finish the season off on the road @Forestview on the 7th of November.
So what needs to be done to get in the playoffs!?
“I feel like 6 wins were in” says Coach Joyce.
Baby steps for East Gaston could skip over walking and turn to running extremely fast.
Is the pressure mounting?
“There is no pressure for me to win. Do I want to win? Absolutely!” says Joyce “I don’t like to lose”
