DURHAM, N.C. – The 14th-ranked Duke women’s basketball team defeated Wyoming 63-40 Thursday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium. For the first time in school history, the Blue Devils held three straight opponents to 40 points or under and improved to 10-2 overall and 8-0 in Durham.
With the victory, head coach Joanne P. McCallie is only one win away from reaching the 600-win plateau of her collegiate career.
The Blue Devils were led by fifth-year senior Lexie Brownand redshirt sophomore Haley Gorecki as Brown posted 20-plus points for the fourth straight game to tie a Duke career high.
Brown tallied 23 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals while Gorecki collected 14 points and nine boards and posted a career-high five steals. Gorecki’s double-digit scoring this evening is the third straight and fifth this season.
The first quarter got off to a slow start with multiple turnovers on both ends of the floor before Duke settled into a 7-0 lead. Wyoming fought back and tallied eight points of its own to end the first trailing, 13-8. Sophomore Leaonna Odom was solid on the boards for the Blue Devils with four early in the contest.
Sophomore Faith Suggs registered her first basket of the evening followed by a nice two in the paint through some tough Cowgirl defense by Haley Gorecki. Duke pressured the ball on the in-bounds to set up a steal by Gorecki for an easy two. Odom picked up her first block of the contest with a huge swat down low and ended with three on the day, good for her 17th of the season. Duke continued to hold a six-point lead at the half, 25-19.
At halftime, Odom and Gorecki led Duke on the defensive end with six rebounds each, with Gorecki also owning three steals.
Duke found its rhythm in the second half as the squad notched 25 points, equal to the first-half points combined. Gorecki connected on back-to-back layups from Cowgirl turnovers and then assisted Brown on a deep three. Brown exploded in the third frame with 12 points to lead the team with 17 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Freshman Jade Williams scored a career-high eight points while adding five rebounds and two blocks.
Duke outscored Wyoming 34-14 in the paint and scored 20 points off of 22 Cowgirl turnovers.
