PEMBROKE – Devin Jones tacked up touchdowns with both a fumble and an interception return as the UNC Pembroke defense controlled the tempo for most of the evening on the way to a big win over its offensive counterparts in the 11th Annual UNCP Black & Gold Spring Game on Thursday evening at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. Code Black forced a handful of turnovers and blocked five kicks to fuel the 127-51 rout. Defensive points were awarded in a host of unconventional categories, including forced turnovers (4 points), sacks (2) and defensive scores (10). Points were tallied a more conventional way on the other side of the ball, but the offense received bonus points for running plays that went for 10 or more yards (2) and passing plays that went for 15 or more yards (2). Jones opened the scoring with a 35-yard fumble return in the opening period, but tacked up another score a short time later on a 22-yard interception return. Jordan Howard scored on a 52-yard interception return, while rising senior Dock Corpening scooped up a blocked field goal attempt and raced 71 yards for an additional score. The offense was not without its highlights, however. Reggie Pinner connected with Winston-Salem State transfer Joseph Grant on a 35-yard touchdown pass right before the half, and the offense scored three times in red zone situations that occupied most of the fourth quarter. Josh Sheridan (6 yards) and Miles Grant (5) both scored on short runs in the final period, while Titus Smith found Aaron Whitaker in the corner of the end zone on a 9-yard fade. Thursday’s scrimmage marked the final on-field action for the Braves until early August when the team returns to campus for fall preseason camp. The Black & Gold will open up its 2017 schedule on Thursday, August 31, when they welcome in-state nemesis Winston-Salem State to Pembroke for a 7 p.m. contest at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
