BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State closed out the Irish Creek Intercollegiate with a solid 290 (+2) to finish ninth in the 16-team field on Sunday at the The Club at Irish Creek. The Mountaineers finished two shots ahead of No. 24 South Carolina and six strokes clear of Ohio State in a field which featured six ranked teams.
North Florida (-14) held off No. 8 Wake Forest (-12) by two strokes to capture the team title No. 31 Florida State (-10) was third, followed by Kennesaw State (-9) and North Carolina (-2) to round out the top five. Florida State’s Cristobal Del Solar captured medalist honors finishing at 8-under with a final round 68 (-4).
App State freshman Walter Brinker (Sanford, N.C.) grabbed a Top 20 finish with a final round 69 (-3) to close at even-par. He had six birdies in his final round and fired a 4-under 31 on the front nine.
Senior Patrick Moriarty (Rockville, Md.) and freshman Tripp Summerlin (Summerfield, N.C.) tied for 25that one over for the weekend. Moriarty closed with a 74 (+3) and had a strong of three birdies over his final six holes to close his round. Summerlin had three birdies and five bogeys in his final round 73 (+2).
Sophomore Alex Burris (Greensboro, N.C.) and freshman Noah Schneider finished tied for 85th. Schneider closed with a 74 (+3).
App State now turns its attention to the Sun Belt Championship at Sandestin Resort in Destin, Fla. The 54-hole event runs April 23-25.
